Smile (2022): Movie Review

Plot: After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can't explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.

Review: The film opens with an emotionally agitated Laura who is having nightmares after seeing one of her college professors commit suicide.

Rose Cotter, an emergency room psychiatrist, tries to assist Laura, but the scared teen abruptly stops crying, smiles, and slits her own throat with a piece of broken glass.

Given that Rose's own mother committed suicide many years prior, this would unnerve anyone, but Rose is particularly disturbed by it.

That persistent trauma, the anxieties, and the stigma associated with it,

In addition to dealing with the shock that follows, Rose also starts to experience terrifying visions in which grotesquely smiling people appear in every dim corner. She also starts to believe that a terrible force is stalking her.

She made an effort to comprehend and escape the curse that had been passed down.

The individuals close to Rose, such as Trevor, her therapist Dr. Northcott, her boss Dr. Desai, and her sister Holly, do appear to believe the issue is more neurochemical than supernatural—until it's far too late.

Rose's ex-boyfriend, Joel, a police officer working on Laura's case, is the only person who believes her. The mystery aspect of the movie is introduced through their hesitant reunion.

NOTE: The plot of the movie adheres to many of the standard beats of a supernatural horror mystery.

HITS: If you enjoy horror films with nasty plots, 'Smile' is guaranteed to pique your interest with its incredibly graphic scenes of creative mutilations and grisly murders.

The bloody scenes of the film are expertly compiled by filmmaker Parker.

FLOPS: Despite how intriguing The Movie 'Smile' seems, its narratives stick to tried-and-true formulas, A change in its Narrative would have been highly welcomed.
